If you are using an EA4xx adapter, please read the following. Otherwise you can skip to "Easy Install"
You must perform a "Custom Install" to install the EA4xx driver. See Custom Install, below.
Also, the latest ROM version as of this installer is 1.00.00. You can check your ROM version by running the diagnostics, or if you have already run the installer, you can check your ROM version by running the "Ethernet Stats" desk accessory. The ROM version is the second revision string next to "Driver Rev:" on the Ethernet Stats screen.
If you wish to update your ROM manually, simply drop the file "EA412" into your system folder (top level) and reboot your machine.
Note: The file EA412 is for all SCSI to Ethernet adapters which include the EA412, EA419, and the EA414.
DUO Dock Users

In order for the DUO to correctly remember it's last network connection, you must copy over your "Network" file from your original System 7.1 disks. This release version 1.02.00 Ethertalk Installer installs version 3.0 of the "Network" file. This version 3.0 does not work properly on the DUO machines. Apple is aware of this problem.
System 7 Tune-Up

If you are using the System 7 Tune-Up disk, make sure Appletalk is enabled in the chooser or you will get an error when you select Ethertalk.
Switching Media ports on the EA412
____________________________
The folder 'DNI-Media' contains a control panel that will force the adapter to use a specific media (EA412, EA414 only). The EA412 and the EA414 will automatically select the active port so normally you do not need to use it. However, if you connect two active networks to the adapter at the same time, you will need to use this CEDV to choose the desired port.
Driver conflicts

This installer installs a driver resource in your system file with the name ".ENET0" and uses the next available ID. If you already have a driver of this type installed, the installer will attempt to remove it. If it does not, you may end up with multiple drivers with the same name. Because of this, you cannot attach the EA4XX to a Macintosh SE with an internal Ethernet adapter since they both use the same driver name.
Diagnostics

If the diagnostics program can find the adapter, the adapter is functioning properly. It performs it's own power-up diagnostics and will be unaccessible from the Macintosh if they fail.
Latest AppleTalk

If the version of AppleTalk on your system is greater than 58.1.1, the installer will not install 58.1.1. As of this release, the latest version of AppleTalk is 58.1.4. However, Apple has only licensed version 58.1.1 to third party developers, so Cabletron Systems cannot legally redistribute 58.1.4. If you need a verson of AppleTalk greater than 58.1.1, contact Apple and ask for the latest Network Software Installer disk.
Installing:

Turn off all Extensions and Control Panels. Under System 7.x this can be done by rebooting and holding down the shift key while the Macintosh is starting up.
Insert the EtherTalk Installer disk.
Double click on the Installer icon
You can now proceed to "Easy Install" or "Customize Install" each of which is detailed below.
Easy Install:

Choose "EASY INSTALL". This will install all the software needed for System 6 or System 7 for running Appleshare over Ethernet.
This includes AppleTalk V 58.1.1, DNI Ethernet driver, .ENET shell,
Ethertalk Phase 2 extension, and Ethernet Statistics.
Custom Install Options:
_____________________
Select "Custom Install" from the popup menu in the upper left corner of the Installer window.
For more information about a Custom Install option, click the "i" button to the right of the option in the Installer.
* AppleTalk V 58.1.1 for System 6
* AppleTalk V 58.1.1 for System 7
These options will only install the AppleTalk version 58.1.1
software by selecting the option with the correct system version.
* Ethertalk Phase 2 SE/30 NuBus
This option will only install the DNI Ethernet driver, .ENET shell, and the Ethertalk Phase 2 extension for Macintosh SE/30 and NuBus systems.
Note: If you are installing over an older DNI driver, you must re-install Ethernet Statistics.
* Ethernet Statistics for System 6
* Ethernet Statistics for System 7
These options will install the Ethernet Statistics depending on your system version.
* Ethertalk Phase 2 LC Type
This option will only install the DNI ENET driver, .ENET shell,
and Ethertalk Phase 2 extension for the LC family, Quadra 605
and the Color Classic.
* Ethertalk Phase 2 SCSI
This option will only install the DNI ENET driver and EtherTalk Phase 2 for SCSI. Select this option if you are using an EA4xx SCSI to Ethernet adapter
Note: If you are installing over an older DNI driver, you must
re-install Ethernet Statistics.
* EA4xx ROM Update
For users with ROM versions earlier than 00.00.21, this installs a file named EA412 in the system folder. This file is used to update the SCSI Adapter's ROM.
Troubleshooting
_____________
When using the installer, you should always perform the "Easy Install" before trying any "Custom Installations".
If your Macintosh takes an LC style NuBus card ( the ethernet card lies parallel to the motherboard when it's put in ) and your Macintosh was released after this installer disk, the Installer may not be recognizing the Macintosh and is installing the NuBus ethernet drivers by default. Choose "Custom Install" and install "Ethertalk Phase 2, LC Type"
The Installer requires 600K of memory to run. If you get an error reporting that there is not enough memory to run it, try the following:
a) On System 7 machines, turn off file sharing.
b) Make the disk cache as small as possible.
c) Set the network connection to built-in.
d) Remove any added init's or cdev's.
e) Reboot after any of the above changes are made.
If the Installation fails
__________________
There are some problems with the Apple Installer and some third party inits that may cause the installation to fail. If you are getting errors from the installer, try one of the following procedures:
Procedure 1:
1) Move all third party inits and extensions from your extensions folder and control panels folder to a temporary folder.
2) Restart your Mac and retry the installation.
Procedure 2:
1) Move all third party inits and extensions from your extensions folder and control panels folder to a temporary folder.
2) Restart with your "Disk Tools" disk and drag your entire System Folder to the trash.
3) Restart with your "Install 1" disk and re-install your system software.
4) Restart, and run the Cabletron Installer again.
A/UX Users

This version does not support A/UX for the EA4xx adapter, call Cabletron Tech Support if you need an A/UX driver.
